Reporting to the Recreation Therapist, Site Manager or equivalent, the Recreation Therapy Aide assists the Recreation Therapist in the development, implementation, planning and evaluation of recreation programs. The Recreation Therapy Aide also works with clients/residents to plan recreation activities of their choice. Qualifications Educational and other Qualifications * Minimum Grade 12 * Some Post-Secondary Therapeutic Recreation Aide course work * BC EMPLOYEES: Food Safe 1 (post July 29, 2013) or equivalentValid Class IV Driver’s License * First Aide certificateKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Able to develop and maintain good rapport with clients/residents, staff, family members,volunteers and the public by communicating in a courteous manner * Demonstrates integrity and respect in difficult situations * Able to document as per GSS/GSC charting guidelines * Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to deal effectively with conflict in a diplomatic and professional manner * Adept at written and oral English communication with internal and external customers * Exhibits an open and sincere approach by demonstrating respect and compassion for everyone equally * Maintains an individual's dignity and self-worth during conversations * Excellent active listening skills * Demonstrates flexibility by changing routine to accommodate client/resident needsWork Experience * Two years’ experience in Complex Care and Assisted Living * Must have previous experience providing recreation therapy to geriatric and disabled populations and those with various cognitive impairments who reside within a Continuing Care/Community Care setting (consideration may be given to individuals with experience supporting other populations) * Experienced in leading individual and group exercises and activities * Comfortable using a computer including email and internetDuties * Assists the Recreation Therapist in the development, implementation, planning and evaluation of recreation programs and plans recreation activities with the clients/residents * Motivates self, clients/residents and others to participate in recreation programs and attends to client/resident needs in recreation programs as required * Documentation on client/resident’s progress notes regarding client/resident participation or other notes as required * Gives input regarding clients/residents participation in programs to the Recreational Therapist for family conferences, attending conferences as required * Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of clients/residents with special needs and adapts recreation programs to fit the needs of the client/resident * Understands and implements the service plan and individual treatment goals established for each client/resident * Follows program protocols as developed by the Recreational Therapist * Effectively uses body mechanics and client/resident transfer techniques and uses wheelchair safety, ambulatory aides and adaptive equipment relevant to recreation therapy programs * Adapts equipment for recreation programs in consultation with the Recreational Therapist and reports all recreation therapy equipment deficiencies to the Recreational Therapist * Participates in and works collaboratively within the team * Provides support, direction and supervision to volunteers * Exhibits strong leadership skills and strives diligently to resolve conflict situations with families, staff and volunteers in a positive, cooperative manner and uses sound judgment and decisiveness when addressing problems * Reports family concerns immediately and works as an advocate for client/resident care * Proactively communicates with team members to communicate changes and solicit feedback from staff * Is sensitive to clients/residents, staff, families, volunteers and others of cultural and religious diversities * Demonstrates dependability by reporting to work on time and as scheduled * Maintains a high standard of cleanliness, keeping the work environment consistently tidy * Adheres to all infection control practices and procedures * Ensures an environment and resources which nurture spirituality * Other related duties as assignedWork within GSS Standards of Safety and Care * Ensures that resources are being used effectively and efficiently and not wasted or misappropriated * Maintains confidentiality on issues related to resident/client and employee matters and GSS/GSC information * Pursues continual learning by participating in in-services and training/education programs * Supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of GSS/GSC * Maintains a safe working culture by assessing and controlling possible health and safety risks * Adheres to all GSS policies and procedures Apply to: https://hrnet.gss.org/HRNETLIVE/CustomizationSitemap.aspx?path=Navigation%2fHome Company: The Good Samaritan Society / Good Samaritan Canada Salary: $29.83 / hr Contract: PERMANENT
